If you haven't, I'll give you a little background. It's a Google app which basically allows you to draw anything you'd like and even if you're a pretty poor artist (or not one at all), this app will guess what you're trying to create and give you illustration options to choose from based on your sketch. You can click on any picture it brings up and it will convert your sketch to a pre-drawn illustration. It's supposed to make drawing quick and accessible to anyone and everyone.
So... Yay or nay?
Personally, I go for the no. Here's a list of my own thoughts - my personal list of pros and cons so you can see for yourself. Or you can try out the app and personally experience it, but I'll let you in on my thoughts anyway.
- If you're really stuck and need something fast, then this is great.
- But, I still feel like it's cheating a bit. First off, it's really not so detailed so you're basically still in need of doing it yourself if you want something a bit more advanced - something of top quality - but that's not really much of an issue since this is clearly for a quick-draw app. So onto my second con:
- Are we becoming even lazier than we are now? Is this going to be just a quick way out of drawing? What is so awful and difficult about putting a little extra effort into our own drawings? Okay, I understand not everyone knows how to draw, but isn't that okay? We each have unique talents of our own, so why does everyone feel the need to draw professionally. Which brings me to my third and biggest con:
- Where is INDIVIDUALITY?!!! If everyone's drawings look the same, is that really art? Personally, I believe that ART = INDIVIDUALITY. Don't you think? The world would be such a boring place if everything was the same. The world would have no personality. It would just be unimaginative. Drab. Monochromatic. Basically - boring.
And besides, have you ever taken a close look at some works of modern art? Sometimes they're so simple. Anyone can splash some paint across some canvas, but if you put a story to it or an emotion to it, you can call it modern art. I once saw a painting of dark, forest-green trees - which were all but paint dabs. It looked as though someone had taken his paintbrush, dipped it generously into the green paint, and dabbed it across the canvas. In the middle were 2 thick, yellow stripes. That was it. Apparently, the artist wanted to depict the contrast of light and dark. Would you call that art? Maybe it's not your style, but yes, it's most definitely art!
And sometimes the most simple designs make the most beautiful ones! In fact, if you haven't noticed yet, I've become fascinated with watercolor artwork. The wonder of watercolor is that I find its beauty in its simplicity. The brush strokes are soft and light with no overload of detail. It's pleasing to the eye and makes a great addition to any wall in any room! And you can most definitely make your own watercolor artwork! (hint hint - DIY possibly coming in a future post. Shhh!)
So do you have to know how do draw the perfect pair of eyes or the daintiest, delicate petals of a rose? No! Whatever you draw is art, so long as it's unique. Because after all, art is individuality!
I'd love to hear your thoughts on this topic, so please comment below. I'd love to see what people think of art and individuality. And after you comment, take out your brushes and paint away ;)
